Canada Pledges $100 million to Polio Eradication
At the Rotary International Convention in Atlanta, global leaders and key donors affirmed their commitment to ending polio by pledging $1.2 billion over 3 years in new money for the fight.
The Hon. Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development, onstage with Bill Gates and other leaders, announced Canada is pledging C$100 million (US$75 million) towards polio eradication..
Canada has been a significant supporter of the fight against polio from the very beginning, having contributed over $600 million to eradication efforts since 2000.
Other pledges came from:-
- Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation: $450 million
(including extending the 2-1 match for Rotary donations) - Pakistan: $155 million
- Rotary International: $150 million
- Nigeria: $135 million
