A devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake ravaged southern Turkey and northern Syria on February 6, 2023. Over 35,000 people have lost their lives, and this tragic number is continuing to rise. It is now the worst the country had seen since 1939, when the Erzincan earthquake in eastern Turkey killed nearly 33,000 people.

Executive Director of ShelterBox Canada Stephanie Christensen says, “We are extremely concerned about the situation. The humanitarian situation in both Turkey and Syria is dire. Right now, search and rescue efforts are underway, however, snow and cold temperatures are making it challenging.”

ShelterBox has significant experience working in the region. It is sending an assessment team to Turkey, and gathering information to determine emergency shelter needs and see how we can best help.

“But we need support from Rotary,” Christensen says. “Whilst we work to understand if and how we respond, we urgently need your help. Your donation today will help families made homeless by conflict or a disaster – wherever the need is greatest.

“While the attention of Shelterbox and the world turns to this disaster, sadly, the shelter need all around the world is also growing. We are also currently working in Cameron, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Somalia, Yemen, the Syrian region, Mozambique, Ukraine and Pakistan. Your donation ensures we can respond whenever disaster strikes. Please donate today.”
