As the new Rotary year begins in District 5040, we usher in the Rotary theme of "The Magic of Rotary." This theme centers on engagement and Empowering Through Unity.
The Rotary Vision Statement encapsulates the start to the new year perfectly: "Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves."
When we break that down, it means that together, people create change, which equates to empowering through unity. You, the members of District 5040, are the magic. You are the magicians, through your projects, your work, and your contributions to Rotary, both locally and globally.

This magic was never more evident than in Whistler when my wife and fellow Rotarian Judy Smith, our dog, Sherlock, and I started our District Governor year with the RC Whistler Installation on July 30th. Then we participated in the Whistler and Millenium clubs’ joint Canada Day Whistler Pancake breakfast on July 1st. Following that I officiated at the RC Whistler Millenium Installation.
While I prefer brevity, here, on this first occasion, is my rather lengthy introduction to the Rotary year.
One of my focuses this year will be on following the footsteps of Past Rotary International President Gordon McAnally, who prioritized mental health. Our number one priority is you, the member. You are the key to Rotary, and a healthy “you” is essential to what we do.
Secondly, it’s about family. Sharing what we do benefits members and Rotary alike. A healthy member who can engage in Rotary is vital. Without these, we won’t have a successful and effective Rotarian.
Third is Rotary. With healthy members and supportive families, members can fully engage in Rotary and make a meaningful impact.
Remember, you are at the top of an inverted pyramid with 1.4 million members. At the base or bottom of the pyramid are the president, directors, and trustees. It is you, the members. who make Rotary successful. You are the ones who create change. You bring Rotary to life and bring projects to life in the district and internationally. I as DG, the executive team, the chairs, and the AGs are all here to support you. We are here to support the clubs when needed.
Reflecting on highlights of the past Rotary year
1. Community Development Projects: Our District has successfully completed several community development projects, including the construction of clean water wells in remote villages, building community centers, and initiating vocational training programs.
2. Youth Programs: We have seen incredible growth in our youth programs, with more young people joining Rotaract and Interact clubs. These programs are critical as they nurture the next generation of Rotarians.

3. Environmental Initiatives: Our environmental initiatives have gained momentum. We have planted thousands of trees, organized clean-up drives, and worked on sustainable energy projects, contributing to a greener planet.
4. Global Grants: We have leveraged global grants to fund major projects, such as providing educational materials to schools in underprivileged areas and supporting medical missions that offer life-saving surgeries.
Exciting upcoming events and opportunities for engagement
1. District Conference 2025: Preparations are underway for our upcoming District Conference April 25 to 27, 2025. This event will be a fantastic opportunity to network, share ideas, and celebrate our collective achievements. Mark your calendars and stay tuned for more details!
2. Training Seminars: We will be hosting a series of training seminars aimed at enhancing the skills and knowledge of our members. Topics will include leadership development, grant writing, and project management.
3. Fundraising: We have several fundraising events planned to support Foundation and End Polio to support our various projects and initiatives. Your participation and support in these campaigns are crucial for their success.
4. Service Projects: There will be numerous opportunities to participate in service projects, both locally and internationally. These projects are at the heart of what we do in Rotary, and your involvement is highly encouraged.
Rotary Spotlight
Each month, I would like to highlight a project that exemplifies The Magic of Rotary and the monthly theme. This will recognize the exceptional contributions of our clubs and members. This month theme is Maternal and Chid Heath Care, we are proud to highlight RC Richmond Sunset for their Clef Pallet and Heart Surgeries and their newly established $100,000.00 Endowment Fund for Maternal and Chid Health Care. Thank you to the Club Members and Magdalen Leung for spearheading Maternal and Child Health in the club.
Call to Action
My final request to you as District Governor is to please work with me. Together, what we do with Rotary is magical. We give so much to communities both locally and internationally. Unfortunately, very few people know about our good work. This year, please send me your success stories and projects. Share what you do in your community, both near and far, to show that we are empowering through unity. Help us share the magic of Rotary.
Special Kudos
Thank you to Judy Smith (District Learning Facilitator 2024-25) in producing this start of year message and to Peter Roaf (AG Richmond, Delta Area and my Wing Man) for continuing to produce this monthly bulletin for all District members.
Have a great month and year by Empowering Through Unity to achieve The Magic Of Rotary!
