The Gibsons Rotary Club is launching a challenge to the other Rotary Clubs in District 5040:

To help put hippo rollers in the hands of 1000 women.

What's a hippo roller? It's a simple 'flick of the switch' technology that frees women from the daily chore of hauling water for their households. The hippo roller’s innovative design allows the transport of water more efficiently by placing the water inside its “wheel.” A full roller holds 25 gallons of water – five times the amount possible using traditional methods. But because the weight is borne on the ground, even small children can easily manage a full roller.

Our Rotary Club recently sponsored 50 hippo rollers which were delivered to a village in South Africa. To connect the club to the recipients, each roller included a Donor Certificate with the club's name and contact info. In return, a video and photos of the Hippo Roller Handover were sent to the club in Gibsons. It was a very touching to see the women holding our Donor Certificates while joyfully singing in gratitude.

Despite its simple technology, this water roller concept is virtually unknown. When Rotarians Luke Vorstermans and Linda Ryan first presented the hippo roller to their club, it quickly captured the excitement of the members. They were eager to be the spark that ignited a global project.

In keeping with the Water and Moon theme, the club will launch the Hippo Roller Challenge during the District 5040 Conference in North Vancouver May 8-10.
