Bio

  • Luke Vorstermans has been an avid advocate of the Hippo Water Roller – a simple 'flip in thinking' that allows women to transport 5x more water in less time and with less effort than traditional carrying buckets of water on their heads. In collaboration with over 100 Rotary clubs in Canada, the USA, Australia and South Africa, over 650 hippo rollers have been delivered through Rotary clubs in South Africa, Lesotho and Namibia. The COVID-19 Pandemic has given the project a sense of urgency.

  • Luke is an informed and engaging speaker who has presented the hippo roller to over 30 clubs and non-profits in BC. He is keen to create awareness of this simple tool and put it on the world stage. Here is a link to the project:

Presentation

The 1000 Survival Gardens Project aims to deliver 1000 Survival Garden Kits to 1000 women in rural South Africa.  A Survival Garden Kit includes the tools and seedlings to start small homestead vegetable gardens.

As the world grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic, many countries in Africa are also "on the brink of hunger pandemic" that could lead to multiple famines if immediate action isn't taken.

In many rural settlements in Southern Africa, women are the frontline workers. As the coronavirus upsets the familiar community routines, unemployment, business failures, school closures, and social isolation have become the new reality.  .With little income and sparse government assistance, women are faced with providing food for their families by resorting to growing their own food.
